What is Minoxidil?
Minoxidil is an active ingredient discovered in the 70s. Over the years it has been used for various pathologies, mostly for hypertension treatment.
As a side effect, hair regrowth was noted in patients using drugs with this active ingredient, the effects were also noted in patients suffering from hereditary androgenetic alopecia.
Thus the idea was born: from that moment on, research focused more on hair regrowth effects than on the original one as a vasodilator. For this reason, now Monoxidil is perhaps the most famous and used active ingredient for hair regrowth.
What the hair growth and hair loss phases are?
Anagen, telogen, and catagen are the three phases of the hair growth cycle.
Anagen phase: The anagen phase is the growth phase of the hair. During this phase, the hair follicle is actively producing new hair cells, which are pushed up to the surface of the scalp as the hair grows. The anagen phase typically lasts for two to seven years, and the length of the anagen phase determines the maximum length that a person’s hair can grow.
Telogen phase: The telogen phase is the resting phase of the hair. During this phase, the hair follicle is not actively producing new hair cells, and the hair shaft is not attached to the follicle. The telogen phase typically lasts for about three months, and at the end of this phase, the hair falls out and is replaced by a new anagen hair.
Catagen phase: The catagen phase is the transitional phase between the anagen and telogen phases. During this phase, the hair follicle shrinks and the hair shaft detaches from the follicle. The catagen phase typically lasts for about two to three weeks.
Overall, the hair growth cycle involves a continuous process of hair growth, resting, and shedding. Understanding the hair growth cycle can help us better understand and address common hair issues, such as hair loss and slow hair growth.
How does Minoxidil Works?
In the beginning, it was thought that its vasodilator function was the only cause of hair regrowth but after some studies it was understood that the Minoxidil, applied topically, opens the potassium channels by getting more blood, oxygen, and important substances to the follicle, the vasodilating action further amplifies the result and thanks to its stimulating property on Beta-Catenin in the follicular dermal papilla it can act as a regulator of the hair cycle, prolonging the Anagen growth phase and minimizing the passive ones of Telogen and Catagen.
Due to the cycle synchronization effect mentioned above, at the beginning of therapy what experts call “Fall induced by minoxidil” appears, which generally occurs after about a month of taking and can last a few weeks. During the induced fall the hair falls out in the dormant phases of Telogen and Catagen and will be replaced by new Anagen hair.
So don’t worry if the first few weeks or months of treatment you see yourself getting worse, it’s normal, it takes perseverance and patience even if applying the lotion every day involves a little stress, you don’t have to be anxious, positive results will surely come, it will take at least 4-6 months to see them.
